1989 NASA Stennis Space Center research team investigated how to maximise the air purification effect of plants. It was mainly focused on contaminants such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene.
These three contaminants are common contaminants indoors, as they are found in common products such as paint, ink, furniture, synthetics fibres, detergents, and cigarette smoke. The most important finding was which part of the plant was filtered. As part of the experiment, researchers, found that all the leaves were removed and the air purification effect was slightly reduced.
The effect of plants with activated carbon medium shows how effectively the system removes benzene and trichloroethylene from the air.

Anthuriums are listed in NASA’s air purifying plants list. They are one of the best houseplants that purify indoor air. Their large, dark leaves suck up ammonia, formaldehyde, toluene and xylene, so they’re a thoughtful present for a workplace

Alongside being a natural air filter, the Boston Fern also restores natural moisture to the air. In fact, the plant has shown to be effective for people with dry skin or irritable noses or throats due to their moisturising properties

Dracaena plants have shown to be one of the most effective air filters. The plant removes formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene and carbon dioxide – all of which are linked to health problems. Dracaena plants also tend to increase the humidity of a room which in turn helps to control respiratory distresses
