**Living Walls: Attracting Butterflies and Bees to Enhance Pollination**

**How can a living wall improve the environment?**

An artificial green wall can contribute to and facilitate the cross-pollination of plants and flowering species, especially in urban areas where there is reduced ground-level planting space and where flowering plants may otherwise struggle to survive.

Bees are naturally drawn to species that provide nectar and pollen. Nectar is a sweet carbohydrate-rich energy source for bees and is essential for their survival. During the process of collecting nectar, bees pick up pollen from a male plant’s reproductive parts, known as stamens. In turn, this pollen is then transferred to other flowers, resulting in cross-pollination and fertilization.

By using flowering species in a living wall you are helping to produce nectar and supporting bees throughout their natural life. By diversifying your plant selection it is possible to provide nectar and pollen suitable for adult bees, as well as providing a vital source of energy for growth in the larval stage.

Bees are wonderful creatures, and they are our most efficient pollinators and play a crucial role in our ecosystem. Flowering plants benefit the whole environment by positively impacting the pollination process not only in your living wall but surrounding gardens, parks, and woodland areas. In urban areas where there is a need for cleaner air and greater bio-diversity a living wall can provide crucial pollen and shelter to insects.

Flowering plants such as Skimmia and Persicaria attract bees and fill the air with a rich scent. Bees are drawn to this species because of their pollen and nectar-rich blooms.

**Will a living wall attract butterflies?**

An artificial green wall can also potentially attract butterflies as they are also drawn towards species which provide nectar and shelter. The more colourful a plant the more attractive they are to butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Butterflies are particularly attracted to vibrant lush plants that produce nectar-rich flowers such as Lavender and various species of Begonia. This type of flower provides the perfect feeding ground for butterflies, as the nectar is easily accessible for their long tongues to access.
